Making Memories with Masks

Like many people, WSE 2nd grade teacher Kathy Reifert picked up a new hobby of making masks during the Stay Home order. The start of school hasn’t slowed her sewing down, in fact, it might be just the opposite.

A breast cancer survivor, she sewed each staff member a pink mask in October. But she’s also been making them for her students. She started with a few students who she knew might need a couple extra, but then as she learned their favorite colors, sports, hobbies or characters, she just kept going. She also made all of them a red one for Red Ribbon Week. The kids love getting a new mask because they know it was made especially for them. “It’s something I can do during this time,” Reifert says. It helps her take a break, and she’s helping out at the same time. She’s sewn many more than are needed, so there’s a basket of masks available in case any of her students forget theirs at home. She's lost count, but estimates she's sewn about 400 masks to date.
