OPS has Three National Showcase School Nominees

For the first time, Washington Street Elementary school was named a nominee; for the second year in a row, both Dix Street Elementary and Otsego Middle School have been named nominees. Both DSE and OMS went on to win in 2019-20!

“It is truly an honor to be nominated again this year. CKH has always held a special place in my heart so to be recognized as a national showcase school is quite an honor. Our staff embraces the concept and truly believes in relationships before rigor. CKH is not just something that we do, it is part of our everyday culture,” says Melissa Koenig, OMS Principal.

The National Showcase Schools awards announcement states that “Capturing Kids’ Hearts recognizes and celebrates schools that go the extra mile each day, creating the social-emotional safety on school campuses that is conducive to learning.” There are 339 US school campuses that have been selected as 2020-2021 Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase School Nominees.

"I am so excited that Dix Street Elementary is being recognized for a second year in a row with a nomination to the CKH National Showcase School program. The staff at Dix Street takes social-emotional learning very seriously. CKH is the perfect vehicle for building relationships and creating a team in each classroom that allows us to maintain and monitor social-emotional wellbeing in each student."

For more than a decade, Otsego Public Schools has partnered with Capturing Kids’ Hearts for professional development across the district, “Through experiential training, expert coaching, and personalized support, Capturing Kids' Hearts equips professionals in K-12 education to implement transformational processes focused on social-emotional wellbeing, relationship-driven culture, and student connectedness,” states the CKH National Showcase Schools announcement. CKH began in 1990 by Flip Flippen with one school and has grown to serve 37,000 educators.

“It is an absolute honor to be a CKH Showcase School Nominee. At Washington Street Elementary, we take pride in putting positive relationships with our students at the forefront of everything we do.  As Flip Flippen would say, ‘If you have a child's heart, you have his head’,” says Jennifer Knight, Washington Street Elementary Principal.

Each building will now go through an evaluation process and visit from CKH representatives. The Showcase School winners will be announced in April.
