For the 11th year, students in 3rd-5th grade at WSE had the opportunity to join a special program focused on fitness and fun - Warriors. Physical Education teacher Amy Nieuwenhuis, along with several other staff members, started this program to introduce students to great physical fitness activities with a rewarding final event.
The kids train two days a week for six weeks and learn to improve their skills in running, biking and swimming. They also focus on how to do each of them safely whether it’s to prevent injury or staying safe in the pool or on the roads with those exercises. Each year, there are students who learn to ride a bike or swim for the first time.
It’s an incredible accomplishment for all students as they complete the Ultimate Fitness Challenge at the end of the program, to complete a 5K triathlon. Each one gets to run through a winners ribbon at the end and one the most inspiring parts is that each warrior lines the final sidewalk to cheer on those yet to cross the finish line.
