Bond-Issued Extension

Otsego Public Schools is committed to giving our students opportunities that help them grow as individuals and into successful learners. We want to give them the knowledge and tools to help them as they navigate our digital world and be career and college ready upon graduation. On November 7th, OPS is asking voters to consider a bond-issued extension that would allow OPS to build an Early Childhood Center and enhance technology in the district.

Since voters passed the school bond in 2004, Otsego Public Schools has been able to refinance bonds that saved district taxpayers $13 million in interest and cut the payoff date from 2040 to 2034. This ballot request would extend the payoff date back out to the original commitment of 2040. There would not be a millage rate increase, but OPS would receive $6.9 million dollars. Of that amount, $5.4 million, along with a $500,000 donation from an OPS graduate/community member, would be used to construct an Early Childhood Center off of 18th Street in Otsego to house and expand our preschool programming. This venture would include a partnership with the Kalamazoo Nature Center to make it nature-based. In addition to an Early Childhood Center, the remaining $1.4 million would be used to provide additional technology in the classroom. OPS would go 1:1, which mean each student would have a digital device to use in their learning. This will help our students prepare for the digital world that awaits them and will get them started connecting, collaborating, researching and engaging in real-world projects and solutions and open them to a world of resources not available in a typical classroom setting.
